How to Spot Fake & Adulterated Spices: 5 Quick Home Tests for Haldi, Mirch & Dhaniya

Spice adulteration is one of the oldest and most dangerous food frauds in the world. From chalk powder and starch fillers to toxic lead chromate dyes in turmeric, compromised spices not only dilute the flavor of your cooking — they pose severe long-term health hazards. Here are 5 traditional kitchen-tested home detection methods recommended by food safety experts.

Test 1: The Water Settling Test for Pure Turmeric (Haldi)

Take a transparent glass of warm water. Add 1 teaspoon of turmeric powder on top without stirring, and let it sit undisturbed for 20 minutes.

  • Pure Turmeric (Foodphenic Salem Haldi): The pure stone-ground powder will slowly settle to the bottom of the glass. The water above will remain clear and light golden yellow.
  • Adulterated Turmeric: If the water turns cloudy, murky yellow immediately, or shows thick suspended milky layers, it indicates added chalk, maida (starch), or synthetic metanil yellow dye.

Test 2: The Red Chilli Brick Powder & Artificial Color Test

Add 1 teaspoon of red chilli powder to a glass of plain room-temperature water.

  • Pure Kashmiri Mirch: Pure red chilli floats briefly, then slowly sinks, leaving the water faintly tinted. Rubbing the sediment between your fingers feels smooth and oily.
  • Adulterated Mirch: If you see bright red streaks rushing down like ink drops, synthetic Sudan dyes or rhodamine B have been added. If the sediment feels gritty and abrasive, brick powder or powdered river sand was used as a weight filler.

Test 3: The Iodine Starch Test for All Spices

Mix 1 teaspoon of any ground spice with warm water, let it cool, and add 2 drops of medical iodine solution (Betadine). If the mixture turns intense blue or black, starch fillers (rice powder, cornstarch, or flour) have been used to artificially bulk up the product.
